OCD & Intrusive Thinking
(Thoughts that won’t let go)
You might mentally review, research, replay conversations, or seek reassurance. You try to resolve the thought in order to feel settled.
The relief doesn’t last.
The doubt comes back. The question reopens. And your mind goes right back to work. Often, there is a sharp layer of self-criticism attached to this, as if you should be able to control or resolve what your mind is doing.
Over time, this can become exhausting. It can feel like your mind is stuck in a loop you can’t step out of. You may start to question your judgment, your character, or your ability to trust yourself at all.
This is where we begin shifting your relationship to these thoughts, rather than trying to solve them.
This often includes learning counterintuitive tools that help you unhook from the thoughts instead of reinforcing the loop.
That means:
Learning how to disengage from mental loops
Reducing the urge to seek reassurance or certainty
Building the capacity to tolerate doubt without trying to eliminate it
“What if” scenarios that feel urgent and hard to resolve
Fears about harming someone, even when you never would
Doubts about your relationships, decisions, or sense of self
Intrusive sexual, moral, or identity-based thoughts that feel out of character
A need to feel completely certain about things that don’t offer certainty
Your mind gets stuck on thoughts that don’t feel like you. They show up suddenly, often out of nowhere, and can feel intrusive, unwanted, and deeply unsettling. The content can vary, but the experience is similar. Once the thought lands, it’s hard to let it go.
You might find yourself caught in loops around:
What makes this so distressing is not just the thought itself, but what it seems to mean. It can feel like having the thought says something important about you. Your mind tries to figure it out, analyze it, or get to the bottom of it.
